June 2013: Tips, eNews & More!

June 21st is the first day of summer as well as the summer solstice. It will be the longest sun lit day this year and we hope you make the most of it. If you are looking for an excuse to get outside around lunch time, try this: take a look at your shadow outdoors at noon on the 21st, it will be your shortest 'noontime' shadow of the year...That's worth a look!

Are your children on Summer Break?
A break from their schedule does not mean a break from proper oral hygiene. If they are off to camp or traveling over the upcoming weeks, make sure their next cleaning is scheduled ahead of time. That way we can ensure that they start summer off with a healthy smile.

Patio Season Smile
If you are interested in bringing out your beautiful, healthy smile for the endless photo opportunities of Patio Season, give us a call or request an appointment here. Now is a great time for us to discuss the smile of your dreams.

Reminder:
While we understand the impulses and spontaneity that the summer can bring, please remember to notify us at least 2 business days in advance by phone if a summer activity creates the need to reschedule an appointment.

Have a great summer and Happy Fathers' Day (on the 16th) to all of the dads out there,

Dr. MIlligan and the High Park Dental Team

Weekend to End Women's Cancers!

To our wonderful patients,

For the last 6 out of 7 years, there have been a group of us that have walked alongside other participants in the 60 km Weekend to End Women's Cancers walk, benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Each year the participants raise millions of dollars that go to research at the Princess Margaret hospital, one of the leading research facilities in the world, to aid in the search for a cure for all women's cancers.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, none of us walked in 2012, but this year Jacquie and our new office manager, Heather S. (same name, different person) will be participating in the 2 day 60 km walk around the streets of Toronto. With the hope that the funds we raise will help researchers find a cure that could end this disease that affects so many people around the world, no matter who or where they are.

We are walking for our families, our friends and our patients that have been affected by cancer.

In the 6 years that our group has walked, we have raised just over $90,000! This year, Heather S. and I hope to raise enough to break the $100,000 mark! Something we can do with your help.

Each of us needs to raise a minimum of $2000 in order to walk. We realize that in these difficult economic times, it may be difficult for some to sponsor us, but any amount is greatly appreciated.

So, we are asking for your donation to support our efforts in this amazing 2 day experience. You can donate by using the forms available at the office, or by visiting the website at www.endcancer.ca and using our personal identification numbers found on the forms or by typing in our names.

With love and thanks in advance,

Jacquie and Heather S.

Is Something Missing From Your Smile?

Is your smile all that it can be? Or is there something missing?
Many people have a missing tooth in the back of their mouth and feel as though, if no one can see it, it's not a problem. This is not entirely true.

While you may not see that missing tooth as causing problems, you run the risk of the surrounding teeth drifting out of position and doing visible harm. Missing teeth also cause your surrounding teeth and gums to become far more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. One of the solutions we can offer patients with missing teeth is called a dental bridge.

What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a false tooth, known as a pontic. It can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges can do many things, including reducing your risk of gum disease, help to correct minor bite issues and can even improve your speech.

Lighten Up This Summer!

As Spring gives way to Summer many fresh local foods are in season, making it the perfect time to start eating more raw foods. This means trying to build more of your meals around fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts. Raw foods are loaded with enzymes, vitamins and nutrients.

We are not suggesting you become a 'raw foodie' or adhere to strict guidelines, rather that you incorporate more fresh raw foods into your diet. Even if half of your meals each day consist of raw food as the foundation you will have more energy, lose weight and feel great.
