July 2014: Tips, eNews & More!

Hope you had a great Canada Day long weekend!

With summer in full swing, more and more people are takng advantage of all the farmers' markets popping up around their communities. Shopping at farmers' markets gives you a great opportunity to really connect with the food you buy and to learn about where it comes from and who produces it. It's also a great way to teach kids about food, the importance of eating whole foods and cooking from scratch.

Other advantages of buying at Farmers' Markets include:
  • Supporting local farmers and small business owners
  • Enjoying healthier and more sustainable locally grown food
  • Creating an excellent opportunity to communicate with those who grow or create the foods that you eat. It helps to build community in your city or neighborhood.
  • Fruits and vegetables are fresher, and therefore, taste better.
  • It's outside! - what can be more satisfying than enjoying fresh air and sunshine while you shop for ingredients to make something delicious!
When you're not out picking up fresh meat and produce, be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen, keep hydrated and stay cool as best you can!

We hope you are enjoying the summer!

Weekend to End Women's Cancers! Sept 6 and 7

To our wonderful patients,

For the last 7 out of 8 years, there have been a group of us that have walked alongside other participants in the 60 km Weekend to End Women's Cancer walk, benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Each year the participants raise millions of dollars that go to research at the Princess Margaret hospital, one of the leading research facilities in the world, to aid in the search for a cure for all women's cancers.

Once again, Jacquie (580771-2) and Heather S. (580792-9) will be participating in the 2 day 60 km walk around the streets of Toronto. With the hope that the funds we raise will help researchers find a cure that could end this disease that affects so many people around the world, no matter who or where they are.

We are walking for our families, our friends and our patients that have been affected by cancer.

In the 7 years that our group has walked, we have raised just about $100,000! This year, Heather S. and I hope to raise enough to surpass the $100,000 mark! Something we can do with your help.

Each of us needs to raise a minimum of $2000 in order to walk. We realize that in these difficult economic times, it may be difficult for some to sponsor us, but any amount is greatly appreciated.

So, we are asking for your donation to support our efforts in this amazing 2 day experience. You can donate by using the forms available at the office, or by visiting the website at www.endcancer.ca and using our personal identification numbers found on the forms or by typing in our names.

With love and thanks in advance,

Jacquie and Heather S.

Are You a Teeth Grinder?

Bruxism is the term used to describe the grinding and clenching of teeth, often during sleep. As with most problems that occur during sleep, bruxism often goes undetected until a spouse or partner hears the grinding at night or damage is detected by your dentist.

Bruxism is often caused by factors such as:
  • Stress
  • A reaction to pain
  • Certain sleep disorders
  • Misaligned teeth

The problem is often increased with the consumption of caffeine and alcohol. In severe cases grinding and clenching can cause dental problems including chipping, hot and cold sensitivity, damage to dental work and more serious scenarios.

Smoky Eggplant Dip

When you're at the farmers' market, be sure to pick up fresh vegetables, including eggplant, spinach and garlic for this delicious smoky eggplant dip. It makes a great healthy snack to enjoy at a BBQ, at the beach or just lounging around the house.
