August 2013: Tips, eNews & More!

We hope you are enjoying the relaxed pace of the summer, and at the same time getting out and taking advantage of the activities that the season brings.

Have you been involved in a group sport this summer?
With the season winding down, now is the time to look for an indoor activity for the fall. If your choice of sport involves contact or strength and balance, talk to us about a custom fitted mouth guard. Above and beyond the benefits of safety and protecting your smile, some mouth guards have been shown to improve your overall sports performance.

Are you or a family member headed off to school in September?
Many post secondary institutions offer health plans that include dental coverage. If you are enrolled in a post secondary program, remember to look into the coverage offered to you. Your new school schedule may keep you busy, remember to make your oral health a priority.

Enjoy the rest of your summer,

Dr. MIlligan and the High Park Dental Team

Weekend to End Women's Cancers!

To our wonderful patients,

For the last 6 out of 7 years, there have been a group of us that have walked alongside other participants in the 60 km Weekend to End Women's Cancers walk, benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Each year the participants raise millions of dollars that go to research at the Princess Margaret hospital, one of the leading research facilities in the world, to aid in the search for a cure for all women's cancers.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, none of us walked in 2012, but this year Jacquie and our new office manager, Heather S. (same name, different person) will be participating in the 2 day 60 km walk around the streets of Toronto. With the hope that the funds we raise will help researchers find a cure that could end this disease that affects so many people around the world, no matter who or where they are.

We are walking for our families, our friends and our patients that have been affected by cancer.

In the 6 years that our group has walked, we have raised just over $90,000! This year, Heather S. and I hope to raise enough to break the $100,000 mark! Something we can do with your help.

Each of us needs to raise a minimum of $2,000 in order to walk. We realize that in these difficult economic times, it may be difficult for some to sponsor us, but any amount is greatly appreciated.

So, we are asking for your donation to support our efforts in this amazing 2 day experience. You can donate by using the forms available at the office, or by visiting the website at www.endcancer.ca

With love and thanks in advance,

Jacquie and Heather S.

The Road to a Healthy Smile

More than 40 percent of children have tooth decay by the time they reach kindergarten.

This statistic is alarming!

You've worked hard to take care of your child, from late night doctor visits to changing diapers; wouldn't it be nice to have someone else sharing some of the load not to worry about tooth decay? Your child's oral health care should start early!

You should schedule your child's first dental visit when they are between six months and one year old. It is important to check those erupting teeth as they are prey for decay as soon as they appear!

How to prepare your child:

Our office will tell you what to expect during your child's first dental visit. To prepare your child for their first visit you need to let them know what to expect so they won't be surprised or startled. The key is to be patient and remain calm. This way your child won't react to your anxiety.

Is Your Family Getting Enough Greens?

Leafy green vegetables are one of nature's richest sources of a full spectrum of nutrients.

So look beyond spinach and broccoli and get familiar with kale, collards, swiss chard, arugula, bok choy and other greens you can find at your grocery store, specialty stores and of course farmer's markets depending on the season.

Regardless of your diet, greens should be an essential component of your day. Depending on your taste, there are many ways to get more green veggies into your diet. Through different preparations and by the very nature of vegetables, greens offer very unique flavours and textures. From side dishes to mains - and even in smoothies and juices - there are endless ways to add more leafy green vegetables into your family's diet.
